Fourth Grade
Our fourth grade team provides a safe, student-centered learning environment. We integrate our content areas to provide a balanced approach to learning and provide a global perspective. We use various data points to identify gap areas and differentiate instruction for all students. The use of small group instruction through guided reading and guided math is used daily. We plan and collaborate as a team to create challenging and unique learning experiences for all students.
We will ensure your child receives an individualized education based on his/her learning needs. We follow the Primary Years Programme framework for a transdisciplinary approach to teaching. This means that we will teach all of the subjects together so we can dig deeper into learning. We will encourage students to be inquirers and investigate what interests them.
Our fourth grade ELA curriculum focuses on increasing our reading of informational text, studies of different genres of literature, as well as speaking and listening skills through presentations, and class discussions. In Math, we investigate multiplication, division, operations with fractions, introductory geometry, and multi-step word problems. Social Studies provides us the opportunity to explore NC history and the impact of other cultures on NC. Our Science focus is on the interactions of natural forces, including electricity and magnets, rocks and minerals, the Earth and Moon, animals and adaptations, and the flow of energy through the environment to humans.
Our students have daily access to iPads in the classroom to use for research and online learning. We use a variety of programs including Reflex Math, Flocabulary, Big Universe, Discovery Ed, and MobyMax to enhance student learning. To enrich our Science and Social Studies learning we take field trips to places such as Discovery Place, Raleigh, and Ft. Dobbs Reenactment Day. We also provide hands on learning experiences, such as STEM challenges to encourage our students to inquire about the world we live in.
